Influences: old school rap, Roland TR-808 drum machines, autobiographical breakdancing experiences
Listen For: vocal nods to Grandmaster Flash and The Sugarhill Gang, DJ record scratching, Dr. Rock beatboxing
lyrics
Well let me take you back to the 1980s, a very long time ago
Where believe it or not you know MTV played, music videos
There were jelly shoes, parachute pants and cassette tapes don't you know
And people walkin' around with great big boom boxes, everywhere they'd go
And don’t you know that we were
CHORUS
Breakdancin', Breakdancin’
Everybody was Breakdancin', Breakdancin’
Uh huh huh, uh huh huh
Well I must have been about 11 years old and I thought I would give it a try
So I went on down to the community center with a, twinkle in my eye
I looked over a list of the classes, they offered, and found what I was looking for
Then I went on down to room 209 and when I walked through that door, don’t you know that they were
CHORUS
Mr DJ
Break it down to the beat box
Break dance robots, please report to the dance floor
Do the moonwalk do the moonwalk
Slide you feet j-j-just like this
Now the wave now the wave
Wave your arms wavey wavey
And the caterpillar caterpillar
Watch your back or the worm
Backspin can you backspin
Spin it all around round and around
What about the windmill about the windmill
Now hold on well, hold on
Can you headspin, headspin, can you headspin, headspin can you spin…..
Wait…….hold on...I gotta…...th….I…..wait wait wait
Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait!!!
Okay, full disclosure y’all
I only completed breakdance level one and the head spin and the windmill that was level two so…..
I, can’t do those…..
Back to the beat y’all
Well the years have passed and I'm full grown man all set in my ways and such
And I gotta admit, on the current trends I'm just a, little out of touch
But just the other day I was watching television and much to my surprise
There was a little kid, about 7 years old and right before my eyes
Don’t you know that he was
CHORUS
Breakdancin', Breakdancin’
You know, he was Breakdancin', Breakdancin’
It’s comin’ back around again Breakdancin', Breakdancin’
Uh huh, Breakdancin', Breakdancin’
Everybody all together
Hotel
Motel
Ha ha Holiday Inn
CHORUS
Breakdancin', Breakdancin’
Everybody was Breakdancin', Breakdancin’
It’s comin’ back around again Breakdancin', Breakdancin’
Uh huh, Breakdancin', Breakdancin’
